Dr. Barry Gold

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Program Director, Marine Conservation Initiative
Before joining the Foundation, Dr. Barry Gold managed the David and Lucile Packard Foundation’s efforts to develop a scientifically credible framework for ecosystem-based management of coastal-marine systems. He also directed their work to more effectively link science with policy and decision-making. Prior to that, he was chief of the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center where he led an effort to understand and restore the Colorado River ecosystem. Dr. Barry Gold has extensive experience working at the interface of environmental science and policy and has held senior positions at the Department of the Interior, the US House of Representatives, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received a B.S. from the University of Miami, an M.S. from the University of Connecticut, an M.A. from George Washington University and a D.Sc. from Washington University. Dr. Martin Pastoors serves as lector of Marine Policy at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences and as senior researcher at Wageningen IMARES, Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies. Previously he has operated as senior advisor to the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality and he has been the Chair of the ICES Advisory Committee on Fishery Management (2006-2007) and vice-chair of the ICES Advisory Committee (2008). He organized and participated in several EU funded research projects dealing with the interface between science and policy (PKFM), the development of tools for management strategy evaluations (EFIMAS, COMMIT) and the links between biological and economic sciences (EFFORT-F, TECTAC). Gary Griggs

UC Santa Cruz, Institute of Marine Sciences, Coastal Processes and Geologic Hazards Director Distinguished Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences
Gary Griggs's research is focused on the coastal zone and ranges from coastal evolution and development, through shoreline processes, coastal engineering and coastal hazards. Recent research projects have focused on documenting and understanding shoreline erosion processes including temporal and spatial variations in rates of retreat; evaluating the effectiveness of coastal protection structures and the impacts of coastal engineering projects (seawalls, jetties, breakwaters) on coastal processes and beaches; evaluating littoral processes, the mechanisms which move sediment along high energy rocky coastlines; and quantifying littoral cell budgets. Gary holds a B.A. from University of California, Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. from Oregon State University. His teaching interests are Coastal Geology, Coastal Processes and Oceanography. emanuelgoncalves

Emanuel Gonçalves

ISPA – Instituto Universitario

Emanuel Gonçalves’ research interests are ecology and behaviour of reef fish, fish larval ecology and recruitment and Marine Protected Areas. His studies are centred on several aspects of fish biology, ecology and behaviour, namely: life-history strategies, reproductive behaviour, territoriality, alternative reproductive tactics, community structure and dynamics, larval development and ecology, recruitment processes and conservation. Most of the work is done in the field, and we use the comparative approach with littoral fish species, particularly blennies, gobies and gobiesocids. He is also involved in studies of recruitment processes and patterns and structuring mechanisms of littoral fish communities which intent to implement a medium to long term database system, intended to contribute to the monitoring, management and design of Marine Protected Areas in Portugal. He has been involved in the development and implementation of the Portuguese and European Ocean Strategies. See: http://www.ispa.pt/ui/uie/bcao/emanuel_goncalves.asp
